New Learners
Lessons are available from 1 - 2 two hours or more. It is for you to decide what best suits your individual circumstances
New learner drivers often ask how many lessons they will need to pass the DSA practical driving test. The DSA ‘s research suggests that about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice is required. But, remember this is an average and while some pupils will require more lessons, others will require fewer. My own experience is that a complete beginner should need 30 – 40 hours of tuition to reach test standard.
Private practice will help speed up the learning process and reinforce what is learned during driving lessons, but it is not a requirement. 5th Gear Driving School’s syllabus does not assume you will have access to practice sessions outside of your lessons.
Pass Plus
Pass Plus is a training course designed by the DSA with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry and specifically aimed at newly qualified drivers. Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge, it will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards. It will help you to become more confident on the roads, and could reduce your insurance premiums. It will also provide you with motorway experience under qualified supervision.
Pass Plus is made up of six practical modules which include:
- driving in town
- driving in all weathers
- driving on rural roads
- driving at night
- driving on dual carriageways
- driving on motorways
Anyone who holds a full UK licence is eligible to take part in the scheme. You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed. You must successfully complete all the modules in the course to a satisfactory.
Intensive
Intensive and semi-intensive courses are available. If you have some experience already, an assessment will be necessary to assess how many hours might be required to reach test standard. For further details please contact me.
Refresher and Motorway Driving
Some people may have passed their test, but not have had much driving experience thereafter. They may therefore lack confidence when it comes to motorway driving or have perhaps have forgotten certain aspects of their driver training. The refresher course generally should not take much time, and can be completed in your own car.
Driver Assessment
Whether we admit to it or not, we all get into bad habits after passing our test. What I offer here is an honest assessment of you as a driver. The aim will be to identify bad habits and provide constructive comment on how to correct them.
What must be considered is that you never stop learning, and a better driver is a safer driver. You may have a fault in your driving ability that could have potentially serious consequences. Only 5% of people who pass their test go on to further training, which means 95% DON'T! You can't trust anybody on the road, so you must be able to trust yourself.
